Shocking: Voter fraud in Fresno County!

by Michael Der Manouel, Jr. - Central Valley (bio) (email)(print)

7-21-2010 7:04 am
Where there is SEIU, there is voter fraud, so we should have known.  Fresno County Supervisor Phil Larson found himself in the crosshairs of a $500,000 SEIU barrage of false and negative advertising for six straight weeks leading up to the June primary election.  Still, he survived and is headed to a November runoff against SEIU backed candidate Cynthia Sterling, a member of the Fresno City Council.

Now we find out that a Sterling volunteer probably committed voter fraud, submitting false registrations.  The Bee has the story today.  Why is this significant?  Larson fell 20 votes short of winning this race outright.  The false registrations numbered over 100.  Now we need to see if those 100 votes were cast.  If they were, the election should be awarded to Phil Larson.

I've uploaded some of SEIU's handiwork in this race.  They are first class dirtbags, that crew.

Phil Larson is a proven conservative and the swing vote for a conservative majority on the County Board.  This is the most crucially important race in the County this year.

Fresno - Ground Zero In Government Reform

by Michael Der Manouel, Jr. - Central Valley (bio) (email)(print)

7-18-2010 9:45 pm
When former Fresno County Lincoln Club Board Member and current City Council member Lee Brand was elected to office in 2008, he didn't wait long to make an impact on how the city does its business.  First, Mr. Brand wrote the Better Business Act, adopted by the Council in 2009, it effectively ended city financed boondoggles by revising and revamping the process by which Fresno can enter into a partnership with a private developer.

But Brand wasn't done there.  This week, the Council will vote on the Labor Management Act, a groundbreaking outline that will govern the rules for how the city negotiates all future agreements with the public employee unions.  You can read the Fresno Bee's endorsement of the Act here and I've uploaded an Executive Summary as part of this post.

A significant impetus behind Brand's effort is the presence of "no layoff" clauses in most of the labor agreements.  The Labor Management Act bans these in the future.  Of course, all the unions hate that there will be sunshine on future negotiations.  And this act is now being viewed as a national model for reform of the negotiating process.

Kudos to Councilmember Lee Brand - making an authentic, measurable difference in the City of Fresno.

Politico Follow Up Story on CD 19

by Michael Der Manouel, Jr. - Central Valley (bio) (email)(print)

6-19-2010 9:58 pm

Politico.com picks up a story last week about an FEC complaint we are preparing against the Congressional Campaign of Jeff Denham.  Make no mistake, we've accepted the outcome of the race.  Make no mistake - the use of soft money funneled to a charity for the benefit of a federal candidate need to be investigated and ruled on by the FEC.  If they find the practice to be legal, the campaign finance system as we know it today will be turned on its ear.

Some members of the California delegation have been pressuring us to stand down.  Quit wasting your time.  We won't stand down until the matter is settled on way or another.  Too many Republicans never learned a lesson from getting their asses handed to them by Nancy Pelosi in 2006 - we cannot and will not be a Party that accepts any form of corrupt behavior - period.

I will write a more complete commentary about the reason we are pursuing this matter.  For now, if you're curious, you can read my blog posts here about the entire affair.

Chukchansi Tribe Funds Last Minute IE Against Patterson in CD 19

by Michael Der Manouel, Jr. - Central Valley (bio) (email)(print)

6-5-2010 7:15 pm
With the latest Survey USA poll showing Jim Patterson with a 4 point lead over Jeff Denham, the Chukchansi Tribe in Madera County is funding a six figure IE against Mr. Patterson - a negative barrage of mail, radio and TV designed as one final assault on Mr. Patterson's record.

The Fresno Bee carries a story on this today - make no mistake about it - there are several FEC complaints pending, and a huge mess to sort out with regard to the tribe's coordinated "fundraising" event feating $150,000 in ads funded by Denham's State account and featuring Denham himself.

If I were the Tribe I'd start the shredders and wipe the email servers.  They've already fired 12 people connected with the "fundraiser" and they'll get rid of anyone with a story to tell about this "independent" expenditure as well.  And I have news for them - we aren't letting this go.

In these parts, we've not seen a campaign quite this filthy - ever.  Even if Denham prevails - DO NOT expect him to be embraced by Fresno County Republicans.  With about 5 contributors in the County, Denham's base of support here is nil anyway.  He's managed to piss of just about everyone in this town and nobody is in the mood to deal with his potential status as an elected official representing this area.  Patterson has done all he can with the resources he has.

Now its time for the voters to decide if they are going to reward shady campaign finance deals and a tribe trying to buy the election for a State Senator, or vote for the two term Mayor of Fresno.  It's too close to call.

Update - Campaign Finance Stench In the Denham Campaign in CD 19

by Michael Der Manouel, Jr. - Central Valley (bio) (email)(print)

5-29-2010 10:05 am
Updated 5-29-10

When the race for the GOP nomination for Congressional District 19 began, I thought we had four pretty upstanding candidates in the race.  I knew that Fresno Council Member Larry Westerlund was an unlikely contender, and that former Congressman Richard Pombo would have a tough time as a former incumbent, but the race started off strong on the issues, and has since degenerated into a mess.

Between State Senator Jeff Denham and former Fresno Mayor Jim Patterson, it was easy to understand that Denham would have a massive money lead due to power of incumbency in fundraising.  What I didn't expect is that Denham would push the limits of campaign finance law to the brink - and perhaps violate those laws in the process.

With $700,000 in his non federal accounts to start this race, money he is prohibited from spending by law in his Congressional run, Denham and his advisors instead opted for a more "curious", and perhaps illegal way to get those soft dollars into his campaign.

As his State report shows today, he donated $25,000  and loaned $150,000 to "Remember the Brave Foundation", a non profit set up to help "Gold Star Families", or families that have lost loved ones in combat operations.  A worthy cause indeed.  Except for this:  Remember the Brave has taken that money and produced television commercials featuring .......... State Senator Jeff Denham, for the promotion of a charity concert to be held at the Chukchansi Casino in Madera County on May 28th.

The concert is being promoted heavily by the Foundation, with spending featuring Senator Denham in excess of $100,000.  The adverstising is being coordinated by Dave Gilliard, whose firm also purchases advertising for Denham's Congressional campaign.

Even more suspicious is that the concert venue itself seats about 1800, and the top ticket price is $45.  Doing the math, if they sell out the concert, the GROSS REVENUE for the event will be about $85,000.  So the foundation, with the help of Jeff Denham, is spending over $100,000 in advertising to generate gross sales of $85,000, and the advertising is being done by the same agency as the Denham campaign.  If this isn't worthy of investigation, nothing is.

Now, anyone questioning this arrangement is being branded "anti veteran", which is just stupid.  Do we just ignore the rule of law when veteran groups are involved?  I don't think so.  If the Denham campaign was truly interested in helping the Remembering the Brave Foundation, they should have just quietly cut a check for $100,000 from their non federal account.

The Chukchansi Tribe has gone apoplectic over all of this, allegedly firing up to a dozen people and denying all allegations of being an accomplice to this activity.  I've uploaded several documents for you to review, should you care to.

The first is an internal memo from the Casino's marketing committee, which actually references this concert as a Denham fundraiser.  The second is a copy of a memo to the FEC commissioners outlining the concerns regarding the legality of the advertising connected to the concert, and the third is a list of those opposing a project that another Tribe is working on for a competing Casino - a project opposed by Jeff Denham.

There is something unseamly about all of this.  The situation is begging to be investigated and should be, immediately.

5-29-10 Update:

Today's Fresno Bee features a story on this campaign finance controversy, detailing the concerns of many about the legality of what Denham is doing.  In addition, there appears to be yet another violation of campaign finance laws with regard to slate male.  Senator Denham's Lt. Governor campaign paid $65,000 for the COPS voter guide last fall.  After he declared for Congress, we looked for a refund of that money to his LG campaign account and it wasn't there.

Now Denham shows up on the COPS slate as a Congressional Candidate.  We cannot find a disbursement from his Congressional Campaign account to COPS.  Conclusion:  there is a strong possibility that this slate was paid for illegally with non federal, or soft money.  I've attached the documentation to this post.

Finally, we've written a letter to the FEC asking for a thorough investigation of all of these matters.  I've attached the letter to this post.

Howard Jarvis Taxpayer Assocation Takes a Dump

by Michael Der Manouel, Jr. - Central Valley (bio) (email)(print)

5-25-2010 10:53 pm

Okay.  You're a State Senator that voted for two horrific budgets in a row, raising the spending baselines to unsustainable levels, in effect creating the fiscal crisis we have in California today.  On top of that, you cast the deciding vote to put Proposition 14 on the ballot when you thought you were running Statewide, enabling one of the biggest RINOS in the history of California, Abel Maldenado, to cut HIS budget deal to raise our taxes and further bankrupt California.

Your reward?

An endorsement in one of the most hotly contested Congressional primaries in California, from the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association.  Yep, you read it.  State Senator Jeff Denham is the endorsed candidate of HJTA in the 19th Congressional District primary.

To be sure, taxpayer advocates and Lincoln Club members fell out of their chairs today all over Central California.  Nobody on the HJTA board bothered to check with any of us, I guess.  We actually vetted all the candidates, did the research, and came up with a dual endorsement of Pombo and Patterson.  There were NO, and I mean NO, votes for Jeff Denham for an endorsement.  I guess we just pay too much attention to the record and not the rhetoric.

I've personally endorsed former Fresno Mayor Jim Patterson for the job, so of course Ive got the added burden of having a horse in this race.  I would have never dreamed that the HJTA endorsement would go to anyone with a hand in creating the mess we have in our State today.

Unfortunately, this organization took a step way down with me today.  I don't care about legislative scorecards or all the other BS, okay?  We're teetering on the brink in this State, and one of the dudes that caused all this is running for Congress, and he gets the HJTA endorsement?

I think the brand is watered down quite a bit by this lack of research.  2010 is not a year to be reckless and flippant.  The stakes are way, way to high now.  I an many, many other conservative leaders in the Central Valley are very, very disappointed.  We think we are owed a thoughtful explanation - not some "voting scorecard argument" that ignores the mess we are in today.

Alan Autry Goes Ballistic

by Michael Der Manouel, Jr. - Central Valley (bio) (email)(print)

5-20-2010 9:41 pm

You may recall that Alan Autry was the Mayor of Fresno for two terms, succeeding Jim Patterson, a current candidate for the 19th Congressional District.  Autry is supporting State Senator Jeff Denham, and has been taking major shots at Patterson while hosting a radio program on KYNO 940 am.  Now, this station has less than a 1% share, so there aren't many listeners, but I am really, really saddened by Autry's attacks.  He's been my friend for many years, but as a Patterson supporter, I feel compelled to respond.

The latest Denham attack showed up in my mail today, with Autry claiming that Patterson left him in a fiscal mess when he took over for Patterson in 2001.

If this claim weren't so ridiculous, it would be laughable, and it makes fair game the Autry record while in Fresno City Hall.

Let's set the record straight:  Jim Patterson was elected Mayor of Fresno in 1993.  The city was gang infested and had the worst auto theft rates in the nation.  Over the next eight years, with some federal help, Fresno hired 384 police officers, cut the crime rate 75%, and balanced eight straight budgets.  Pension obligations were refinanced.  Fresno was named an All American City in 2000.  This is the city that Patterson left Autry.

Now, Patterson had his share of enemies, mostly for being a strong conservative.  He opposed the downtown baseball stadium for fiscal reasons, and has since been vindicated on that position.  But at the time, Patterson's opposition rankled local business leaders.  He stood for private property rights and opposed redevelopment projects that involved eminent domain - which led to a failed recall attempt led by some local developers.  Again, his conservatism was what made his opponents the angriest.

Now Autry says that Patterson left him a mess.  Well, let's look at that for a minute.  Autry championed the downtown baseball stadium - a noose around Fresno's general fund.  He supported City loan guarantees for a failed project called Granite Park - costing the city millions.  And he supported the city loan guarantees for the Fresno Metropolitan Museum - a project that cost the city close to $20 million.  Now, Fresno is having to leverage almost all of its unencumbered assets to pay for those mistakes.

Yet, I don't hear the current Mayor, Ashley Swearingen, saying a negative word about Autry and the mess he left her.  She has a far stronger case against him than he ever had against Patterson.

It's sad to see Alan so bitter about things, especially since he's not ever said a bad public word about Patterson until now - over 10 years after the fact.  I have come to question his judgement - after all, he is one of Arnold Schwarzeneggers biggest supporters - even though Arnold is the worst Governor in Caliifornia history.

Why I'm Supporting Jim Patterson for Congress

by Michael Der Manouel, Jr. - Central Valley (bio) (email)(print)

4-27-2010 2:00 am
Many of you have been following the race here in the Central Valley to succeed retiring member of Congress George Radanovich, in California's 19th Congressional District  There are four candidates in this primary, and until now, I have been undecided about who to support.  I like and respect each of the men running, and at different times have supported each of  them for public office.

In sizing up the race, I would say we have the "annointed" candidate, the "farmer" candidate, the "unlikely" candidate, and the "grassroots" candidate.  Let me explain as follows:

State Senator Jeff Denham was asked by George Radanovich to run to succeed him.  The Central Valley's Westside farmers and Congressman Devin Nunes jumped early on former Congressman Richard Pombo's bandwagon, City Council Member Larry Westerlund shocked everyone by getting into this race as an unknown outsider, and former Fresno Mayor Jim Patterson (pictured) is a product of the grassroots movement sweeping the country right now, the Tea Party.

Each candidate draws from a pretty distinct base of support.  In the final analysis, after weeks of deliberation, I have concluded that former Mayor Jim Patterson is the best man for the job.

As I said earlier, I have the utmost respect for all of the candidates.  I have talked to them all personally and extensively, and informed them of my endorsement.  I think the candidacy of Mr. Patterson is one of the people, the small contributor, the budding Tea Party activist.  The reason for this is simple:  of all the candidates in this race, Mr. Patterson's conservatism, I believe, is the most authentic, deeply rooted in a solid belief system that will not be co-opted by the pressures of Washington.  Jim understands what happened to the GOP in 2006 and 2008.  We've had many, many discussions about it.  He won't be a part of making those mistakes again if Republicans take back the House this year.  This is critical to me and to millions of other voters.  As a matter of fact, this is the most important issue to me.

Costa's "War" on Miller and other fantasies......

by Michael Der Manouel, Jr. - Central Valley (bio) (email)(print)

4-6-2010 7:24 pm
The Roundup, Fresno Bee political notebook and other publications detailed today stories of Jim Costa "going to war" with Leftist Democrat George Miller over the water crisis in Central California.

Here's an excerpt from the Roundup today: "

Reps. Jim Costa and George Miller are getting ready for a Delta smelt smackdown.  Christine Bedell reports, "Costa declared political "war" against a fellow member of the California congressional delegation Monday over the ongoing fight to both protect fish in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and keep delivering desperately needed water to the San Joaquin Valley.

"Costa, D-Fresno, offered to do battle with Rep. George Miller, D-Richmond, after Miller was quoted as promising at a political rally last week to push for tougher restrictions on water diversions to valley farms and cities. Northern California fisherman in large part blame the water pumping for declining salmon populations and, by extension, their livelihoods."

Well, George Miller has been attacking valley ag and water interests since before I ran for Congress in 1994 - 16 years ago.  Costa is just now "going to war" with him?  This is a gratuitous farce, a joke, and pure fiction, and designed for one purpose - distancing himself from his left wing voting record.  Jim Costa has voted with Nancy Pelosi over 96% of the time since she became Speaker.  You would think Costa would have any policy victories to show for his loyalty, but he doesn't.  But he will have a tough fight on his hands in November - I guarantee it.

Westside farming interests are bailing on Costa left and right - money is beginning to flow to the Republican side - finally it appears that otherwise intelligent farmers are tired of the circular firing squad they have set up with their perpetual support of ineffective politicians like Jim Costa.

Rove Visit to Fresno - Richard Pombo's Mention in Rove's Book

by Michael Der Manouel, Jr. - Central Valley (bio) (email)(print)

4-1-2010 10:35 am

This item just posted on the Fresno Bee political notebook blog page - apparently Republican Congressional candidate and former House Member got a mention in Karl Rove's new book, Courage and Consequence.  Rove was in Fresno on Tuesday morning at a breakfast for Supervisor Debbie Poochigian.  Richard Pombo was also at the breakfast, where copies of Rove's book were handed out to the attendees.

Unknown to most, if not all of the breakfast attendees, at the time, was the mention of Pombo on page 463 of Rove's book.  Click here ot read the Fresno Bee post.

The race to succeed George Radanovich in CD 19 is a wide open affair, with Pombo, State Senator Jeff Denham, and former Fresno Mayor Jim Patterson competing for the nomination.  Fresno Council member Larry Westerlund is also running in the contest.  Too close to call as of this date.

Shock Poll: Patterson Tied for Lead n Congressional 19

by Michael Der Manouel, Jr. - Central Valley (bio) (email)(print)

3-21-2010 6:28 pm
A new Survey USA poll shows former Mayor Jim Patterson tied for the lead with State Senator Jeff Denham in the race to succeed retiring Congressman George Radanovich.  The shocking part of the poll is that former member of Congress Richard Pombo in in 3rd place, well back of the leaders.

Now, while I have not made a personal endorsement in this race (that's coming), it is interesting to note that Mr. Patterson has literally spent zero money promoting his campaign, while both Denham and Pombo have been hitting the airwaves regularly in their quest to become better know in the Fresno market.

Powerful ag and business interests have lined up behind Pombo, as well as respected Member of Congress Devin Nunes, but the question remains:  in 2010, will voters select a 14 year former Member to represent them, in this year of throwing out everyone connected to the failures of the federal government?

This is the central issue to be overcome by Pombo, and while he'll have enough money to get his message out, serving in Congress from 1992 - 2006 might be too big of a liability for him to win the nomination.  With 29% undecided, its still way too soon to predict a winner, but this one is going to be interesting all the way to the end.  Count on it.

Profiles in Courage?

by Michael Der Manouel, Jr. - Central Valley (bio) (email)(print)

3-16-2010 2:36 pm
I about hit the floor ten minutes ago.  Assemblyman Michael Villines (R - Tax Collector) has a facebook post touting his new "Profiles in Courage" Award for raising taxes last year in the worst economy in 60 years.  Here was the quote from Caroline Kennedy:

" Faced with the most difficult choices and a budget crisis of unprecedented magnitude, these legislative leaders had the courage to negotiate a compromise that they felt was in the public's best interest," said Caroline Kennedy, President of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation. "They did so knowing they would suffer the wrath of their constituents, powerful interest groups, and their own party members. The members of the Profile in Courage Award Committee chose to herald this story of political courage and bi-partisan compromise with the hope that it will inspire other elected officials facing similar challenges to stand up with courage, to cross party lines, and to do whatever is necessary to better serve the public interest."

Yes, according to Caroline Kennedy, raising taxes is what will "inspire" others across America when facing budget deficits.

Question:  did the tax increase work?  No.  Did it take courage?  No.  Is a formerly conservative Republican really touting an award from Caroline Kennedy?  Sadly, yes.

All I can do is shake my head........... its no wonder the GOP is held in low regard by California voters.

California - Bigger Credit Risk Than Greece?

by Michael Der Manouel, Jr. - Central Valley (bio) (email)(print)

2-27-2010 11:59 pm
The JP Morgan Chief warns in the UK Telegraph that California's credit situation could be riskier that the disaster we are seeing in Greece.  This of course is under the "leadership" of our great GOP Governor and the six consecutive horrendous budgets crafted by his crack finance team and agreed to by the Democrat leadership and stunningly compliant -and duped Republican leaders.

As the GOP heads into the  State convention in a couple of weeks, I wonder how much the Party will have to say about the miserable performance of the Governor and Legislative leaders past.

Does anyone even remember the sales tax increase last Spring?  The celebration of a budget that was a farce and a disaster from day 1 last year?

Voter registration numbers and fund raising are a key indicator of how State residents think about both political parties.  We seem to be all too ready to celebrate failures of Obama / Pelosi and Reid  without thinking of how those failures will actually translate into victory for conservative candidates running under the GOP banner.

The reality is that the problems facing California may not be fixable.  The hole might be too deep, and the fight too tough for the men and women in the GOP caucus.

We might start by being critical of what our own party has produced in California.  Maybe then we can regain some measure of credibility with voters, who are clearly underwhelmed by the performance of our Governor and State Legislature.

Meg Whitman Buckles Under Union Pressure (Again)

by Michael Der Manouel, Jr. - Central Valley (bio) (email)(print)

2-25-2010 9:24 am

Yesterday, I posted my very strongly held belief that to get anything done in California, a political candidate must be willing to be hated.  Meg Whitman refusing to support pension reform and flat out running away from the unions does not qualify.

I wasn't the only one who noticed - last night on KFI AM 640, John and Ken took Whitman to task for buckling under union pressure the very first time she had the opportunity to take them on. In fact, organizer Marcia Fritz flat out states that Whitman, "...just didnt want it on the ballot, I was told that from a lot of her supporters.."

Unfortunately, John and Ken didn't mention that this is actually the second time that Whitman has run from the unions. As we learned recently, Meg Whitman is also actively working against conservatives and the Citizen Power Campaign in addition to refusing to support pension reform.

In case you didn't know, the Citizen Power Campaign is another important initiative supported by grassroots conservatives; and yet another instance where Meg Whitman is working against conservative efforts to fight the unions.

Whitman talks a big game about how she has a "spine of steel" but the facts clearly speak louder than her eBay ads. Listen to John and Ken discuss with Marcia Fritz how Whitman is buckling under union pressure below:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtEaPvLXETY

I'll have to admit, I'm pretty ticked of that we haven't heard much from Poizner on this - its pretty tough for his team to be critical unless they are willing to get in the game in a big way.  Right now Whitman is pretty much running unopposed on TV, and I don't think this is preparing California citizens very well for the kind of Governor's race they deserve:  Mr. Poizner, are you going to start a media campaign here pretty quick or not?
