John, while I rarely disagree with you, let's take a different look at this one. If you look over the mailers (https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B5ynwmJN2lpdZHVBYU5hMGpyaGM) that were sent out by the Travis Allen campaign just before the Primary, one MUST question Troy Edgar's respectability and self-described "tax fighter" persona.

Can anyone honestly believe that Edgar, not long ago a registered "tax 'n spend" Democrat, has just seen the light and miraculously converted to a respectable, tax-averse Conservative? His commitment to fighting taxes seems as true as his commitment to run for Congress -- that was until he discovered he had no hope of winning, bailed on his campaign and somehow found the support of the OC GOP and the endorsements of certain electeds after other, better candidates dropped out of the Assembly race (and before Travis Allen came online and was able to compete for the CRA's endorsement). Simply put, Edgar is an opportunist who seems willing to do or say anything to get elected -- like making personal pledges that can not be enforced or easily tracked. Imagine that Edgar might win, and then be able to say to the Assembly Democrats that he did NOT sign the REAL ATR Pledge. His word will count for nothing, and the Democrats will have an ally in the minority -- perhaps another Doris Allen.

Signing Grover Norquist's Americans for Tax Reform Taxpayer Protection Pledge is far more meaningful and honest commitment of a politician's intentions than making a personal pledge as Edgar's done. In two words, it's the "Gold Standard".

Edgar has NOT offered any explanation as to his deception on this issue and his reasons for not signing the ATR Pledge -- a document to which hundreds of other national and local politicians have committed. When a politician BREAKS his or her ATR Pledge, it's national news and can be well publicized. Norquist is a frequent guest on Fox News, and is one third, along with you and KFI's John and Ken of the Jerry Brown-labeled "Legion of Acceptability". He's to be reckoned with, Troy Edgar is not.

It was only two months ago that you hammered Ashburn, Maldonado and Adams for breaking their tax pledges. So, it's apparent that the Pledge IS important and more than "valid" for reporting purposes. Anything else is a misleading, weaseling substitute.

Bruce and Bob and Jon; there you go again. The question is, is a "tax pledge" a good thing or no? And my take on this is, what would the only President I'd call great in my lifetime, Ronald Reagan, do. Would Ronald Reagan sign a "tax pledge" and decide he would never, ever, support a change in taxes or would he say nuts to such an idea. I think he'd say nuts and tell the proffer of the pledge to take his pledge and ... well you supply the end of the sentence.

There you go again Jon, off the rails and into the deep end of the far right. Did you ever wonder what Ronald Reagan would do? In his own words: "As a result, we have, as you know, submitted a revenue bill of nearly one billion dollars in increased taxes." Reagan went on to explain what the increased taxes would do: "Roughly half of that tax increase is necessary simply to pay off this year’s deficit and put us on a pay-as-you-go basis. Half of the remainder is not a new tax so much as a broader based substitute tax to give, for the first time, direct property tax relief. Next year, with the deficit paid off, that relief can be more than doubled. The remainder – about one-quarter of the total tax revenues – is for the normal increase to keep pace with population growth and increased prices and wages ..." So, what do you think, Jon? Do you think Ronald Reagan would sign on to some dumb tax pledge? No? Neither do I.
