Give Elton What He Asked For -- Another Term
by Mike Houston - Political Law (bio) (email)(print)
There has been lots of e-ink spilled on this blog in the past 10 hours about Elton Gallegly's strategic decision to wait until literally the 11th hour to announce he has no plans to seek another term in Congress. In doing so he has prevented several well qualified candidates from seeking that seat, nonetheleast of which is former Assemblyman Tony Strickland (full disclosure, I am general counsel to his wife, Assemblywoman Audra Strickland).
Here is one solution: Instead of the grass roots getting worked up about Mr. Gallegly's chicanery and instead of engaging in Quixotic legal efforts to get an extended filing deadline, I say let the voters call Mr. Gallegly's bluff and elect him to another term. He obviously has high name ID, and he is the "incumbent" (whatever that means given his circumstances). A few well placed mailers should get him re-elected to another term. If he then decides he isn't up to serving, he can retire and a special election can be called so that a real campaign can be had to fill his replacement.

I agree.
Posted by Andy Nevis at March 11, 2006 12:47pmI would even go so far as to say that if Tony and Audra aren't given a fair chance to run, then the voters should immediatly recall the winner of the election. I don't know if that is legal in a House Race, but if it is they should.
What on earth are you talking about? A friend of mine is a reporter, and he tells me that Michael Tenenbaum's press release criticizing Gallegly and announcing his intention to run against him was sent out on Thursday. Tenenbaum also criticized Gallagly and announced that he would run agianst him in his Friday press conference. The latest Ventura County Star article talks about how difficult it could be for Tenenbaum to get Gallegly's support. They don't even seem to have met before.
Posted by Morris Zorn at March 12, 2006 12:38amPerhaps this incident could inspire someone else to perform a handover to an unknown friend this way in the future. However, there is absolutely no valid reason to believe that this happened in this case.
(I meant that to be in the Gallegly Model thread. My appologies)
Posted by Morris Zorn at March 12, 2006 12:45amSeriously, though, the Stricklands are needed for their own races and are probably legally barred from running at this point, anyway. Gallegly, on the other hand, does not want to run, apparently. I wish the Stricklands luck on their campaigns and the best of health to Congressman Gallegly, but they are not active Republican candidates.
We Republicans DO have a candidate, and he is Michael Tenenbaum. I say we get to know him better. I met him once at an event and I found him to be a very impressive and professional guy. Lets hear what he has to say, because it looks likes he's going to be our man.
Tony Strickland has now resumed his campaign for State Controller, sending out an e-mail last night entitled "Strickland Renews Call for Westly to Audit Reiner." So forget about court challenges or write-in campaigns. (Also forget about recalls, which don't apply to U.S. Senators or Representatives.) Either support Gallegly for another term (whether he wants it or not) or support Tenenbaum. By the way, it's not certain Tenenbaum has even qualified for the ballot; he took out his papers on the last day, and there hasn't been time to verify his signatures yet.
Posted by Rick Dykema at March 12, 2006 7:19amIt is my understanding that signatures are checked immediately, before the candidate even leaves the office. If that is true, then Tenenbaum must be on for real.
