Chron features the FlashReport – Highlights from the News

FR FEATURED IN THE CHRONICLE
Yesterday, San Francisco Chronicle reporter Carla Marinucci penned a very flattering piece on this website, which appeared on the front page of the second section of the paper!  It is a great read, and a lot of folks say some very flattering things.  Please take an opportunity to check it out! (This photo to the right is me working on this site – a photographer came to my home in the early hours of last Wednesday morning!)

MARK LENO: PRO-CRIMINAL
Today’s lead feature column in the FR is an eye-opening piece from Assemblyman Todd Spitzer (pictured to the left) where he writes about what he sees happening with the Democrat majority on the Assembly’s Public Safety Committee.  There has been a lot of controversy lately because of Democratic opposition to some very common-sense ‘tough-on-crime’ measures.  Earlier in the week, in a sarcastic moment, I said that there must be a union for sexual predators in Sacramento, because it is usually at the behest of some labor union that Democrats present such a united, unmoving front.

I would imagine that Mark Leno, the committee’s Chairman and a big source of the problem, is not long for this spot.  There are already rumors that he may be ‘promoted’ into another committee chairmanship.  Going into an election year, this is a bad time for Democrats to be seen as soft on crime.  This is all an example of how the Democrat caucuses in Sacramento are dominated by ultra-liberals.

CTA ENDORSES ANGELIDES
In a shocking move (NOT!) the California Teachers Association has endorsed State Treasurer (and former State Democrat Chairman) Phil Angelides in his run for Governor.  This really is no surprise as Angelides has been a close ally of the CTA since long before eBay co-founder Steve Westly came onto the scene, narrowly defeating Tom McClintock four years ago to become State Controller.  It’s not clear how much money the CTA has to play with for the primary as they emptied their coffers in their all-out assault on the Governor.  But the one CTA leader that I spoke to told me that they will have plenty of cash to make sure they "terminate" Arnold in November.

MY BLACKBERRY MAY GO? SAY IT AIN’T SO!
There is an article in today’s LA Daily News about the proliferation of Blackberry PDA’s amongst politicos.  I can tell you this, I am never without mine.  Not only can I use it to surf the web, and get my e-mail — but I can even post up to the FlashReport weblog right from my little Blackberry!  Right now there are some legal issues surrounding whether the company that owns Blackberry technology has infringed on some patent issues, and it may result in a loss of service for many of us.  This would be tragic — life without a Blackberry would be like — well, going back to the stone age!

RAY HAYNES ASSAILS GOP SPENDING
Assemblyman Ray Haynes penned a piece that appears on the California Public Policy Foundation website today, where he looks at the spending addiction of the GOP – both in Washington and in California.  Haynes says, in part:  "The Party of small government seems to have forgotten its roots. Not to be too critical of my Party in Congress or the governor of this state, but if Republicans are the Party of small government, I don’t want to see the ‘party of big government.’ With all due respect to those making spending decisions in Washington and Sacramento, they exercise little restraint."
