Today’s Commentary: Pro-Environment Republican

Today’s guest commentary is authored by Flash Report contributor Adam Probolsky.
The top story today is the Governor’s appointment of Democrat Linda Adams as Cal EPA chief.  I will let others make the ‘fox in the hen house’ analogies.

But this appointment is a further evidence that the Republicans need to develop some credibility on environmental issues and change the bellwethers on which the public judges whether someone cares about the environment.

Republicans need to change the conversation by totally debunking the idea that drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in Alaska is bad for the environment, promote all the local Republican-lead initiatives (backed by developers) that preserve natural open space and habitat and improve water quality and yes, even acknowledge that Global Warming could, could be something we should at least look into.

Adam, you nailed it. This used to be our issue. I started an environmental education program based on conservative values (no legislation, no taxes, freedom of choice, credible science), and in just 4 years it has become the largest EE program in the country and has spilled over to Europe and Africa thanks to the Internet. In just this school year alone, our schools have kept over 2.2 million lbs. of recyclables out of our nation’s landfills. Governor Pataki and President Bush have lauded the efforts of the schools in Texas and New York that are onboard with the program. Check out the Go Green Initiative website at http://www.gogreeninitiative.org. Conservative conservation works, and I’m happy to talk to any FR reader about how we can reclaim this issue as solid Republicans.

Good thoughts, both of you! Putting all your eggs in one basket is foolish, be you a candidate, party member or interest advocate. We’ve got to cover ourselves in ALL camps, if for nothing else than keeping accurately abreast of what’s going on. Who knows, we might even make some allies and change a few minds along the way! And for those of us in the Big Tent who’ve forgotten the initials of the First Environmentalist, they’re T.R.
