Today’s Commentary: It’s for the children…

With his decision to support new spending for health care and insurance coverage for illegal alien children, Governor Schwarzenegger has in essence poured a vat of honey on legislative Republicans and pushed them into the grizzly bear habitat.

The Republican members of the State Assembly and Senate are now once again the only thing standing in the way of this poor excuse for public policy.  And as Karen Hanretty has already pointed out, they will be on the receiving end of relentless attacks through the rest of the budget process.

The governor has also successfully further alienated the vast majority of voters, regardless of party.  Perhaps the Governor doesn’t care about public opinion and good for him.  But back in the real world where public opinion matters, especially in an election year, his words are problematic.

“Compassion,” second only in left-wing lingo to “activism,” is a wonderful thing, but hardly operates in a vacuum. Every dollar spent in “compassion” towards one is a dollar less available for another. Where is the “compassion” in throwing money at programs that purport to help adults who repeatedly squander every chance – and dollar – they’re given while kids’ school and recreational programs suffer? Where is the “compassion” that builds a “jobs center” for illegal aliens who take away jobs from Americans itching to do them? Where is the “compassion” in funding free or subsidized healthcare for illegals while working class families struggle to pay their medical bills and, if they’re lucky enough to have them, insurance premiums? The next time someone throws the guilt jack at you to cover a bid for “compassion,” Governor, call a spade a spade and trump it with your ace of reason.
