Doolittle Pulls Plug On Re-Election Campaign To House Leadership

As quick as he declared his candidacy for re-election to the House Leadership as Conference Secretary, today Congressman John Doolittle (CA-04) pulled the plug.

House Republicans definately need to change out their top leadership who sailed them into stormy seas — as to whether ‘top leadership’ extends down to the minor leadership post held by Doolittle… I couldn’t say.  But apparently the Congressman has made the decision about whether he deserves re-election to the spot moot.

His release:

Congressman John T. Doolittle (R-CA) made the following statement this afternoon:

"I’m very thankful for the opportunity to return to Congress and represent the fourth district of California.  I’m grateful to the voters for sending me back to Washington, and I want them to know I have heard them.  We need change in Washington including cutting down on spending, lowering taxes, stopping illegal immigration, and bringing more accountability to the spending process.

"This election was a difficult one, but it brought about much needed debate.  It has become clear to me that I can do more for the people in my district by focusing my time and energy on their needs rather than on a run for elected leadership.  There are still some very important goals that I want to accomplish for our district.  I want to see a permanent bridge built downstream of Folsom Dam, widen Highway 80, finish construction on the Lincoln Bypass, and continue to meet our other infrastructure needs in water, wastewater treatment, flood control and transportation.

"When I look back on my service in Congress, I hope it will be marked by what I’ve accomplished for the people of the 4th District of California.  I’m grateful for the time I served in the leadership, but as Republicans enter the minority, I believe I can more effectively address the needs of the people in my district by allowing someone else the opportunity to sit at the leadership table."
