Gov. Schwarzenegger Announces Senior Staff Appointments Continuing to build his leadership team following the election, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today announced appointments and promotions within his office for the new term. Governor Schwarzenegger today announced the appointments of Cynthia Bryant, deputy chief of staff and director of the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research; Alice Dowdin Calvillo, chief deputy cabinet secretary; Dan Dunmoyer, deputy chief of staff and cabinet secretary; Margaret Fortune, senior advisor to the Governor; Chris Kahn, deputy chief of staff and legislative secretary; Ross LaJeunesse, deputy chief of staff and senior advisor to the Governor; Luis Portillo, director of constituent affairs; Michael Prosio, chief deputy legislative secretary; Sean Walsh, senior advisor to the Governor and Daniel Zingale, senior advisor to the Governor and chief of staff to Maria Shriver. “As we begin a new year and embark on my second term in office, I am pleased to have such a strong team of professionals around me,” said Governor Schwarzenegger. “In the year ahead, we will take on some of the greatest challenges facing our state: health care reform, protecting the environment, making our schools more accountable to children and parents, as well as addressing the prison overcrowding crisis – and this dynamic team brings the skills we need to successfully address these pressing issues.” Bryant, 48, of Elk Grove, has been appointed deputy chief of staff and director of the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research. Bryant has more than twenty years of legislative, political and legal experience. Since 2003, she has served as chief deputy legislative secretary in the Office of the Governor. From 2000 to 2003, she served as the director for the Senate Republican Office of Policy where she was the lead policy adviser to the Senate Republican Caucus. Previously, Bryant served as legal counsel to the Assembly Republican Caucus as deputy chief administrative officer and legal counsel to the Assembly Rules Committee. Bryant also graduated from the University of California, Hastings College of Law. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $123,252. Bryant is a Republican. Dowdin Calvillo, 39, of Auburn, has been appointed chief deputy cabinet secretary. She previously served as chief deputy appointments secretary in the Office of the Governor. From 2004 to 2005, Dowdin Calvillo served as deputy director of legislation for the Department of Toxic Substances Control. Prior to that, she was the legislation liaison for the department for three years. Dowdin Calvillo was also a member of the Auburn City Council from 1998 to 2005 where she also served as mayor in 2001 and 2005. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $118,000. Dowdin Calvillo is a Republican. Dunmoyer, 44, of Sacramento, has been appointed deputy chief of staff and cabinet secretary. Since December 2005, he has served as deputy chief of staff and senior advisor for policy development in the Office of the Governor. From 1996 to 2005, Dunmoyer served as president and chief executive officer of the Personal Insurance Federation of California (PIFC), and from 1989 to 2005 worked in various capacities for the PIFC. From 1984 to 1989, he served as the chief administrative officer for the Republican Caucus of the California State Assembly where he developed legislative and public policy strategies and managed a 60-member staff. He also oversaw the day-to-day operations of public policy and member services for 36 Republican state assembly members. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $123,252. Dunmoyer is a Republican. Fortune, 35, of Sacramento, has been appointed senior advisor to the Governor. She has more than a decade of government experience. Fortune has served as an education advisor since 2005 and was most recently director of public affairs for the Office of the Governor. Prior to that, she was superintendent of St. HOPE Public Schools, a Sacramento-based K-12 charter school district serving 2000 students, where she founded Sacramento High School. Before joining St. HOPE, Fortune served as director of Project Pipeline Northern California Teacher Recruitment Center. Her experience also includes two years as assistant secretary in the Office of the Secretary for Education, chair of the Commission on Teacher Credentialing and service on the California Children and Families Commission. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $123,252. Fortune is a Democrat. Kahn, 40, of Sacramento, has been appointed deputy chief of staff and legislative secretary. Since 1999, he has served as partner of Sloat Higgins Jensen and Associates, a governmental advocacy and consulting firm. From November 1998 to June 1999, he was chief of staff for the California State Assembly Republican Caucus. He also served as chief deputy legislative secretary for Governor Pete Wilson from 1995 to 1998, deputy secretary for the California Trade and Commerce Agency, and chief of staff for California State Senator Marian Bergeson. He began his legislative career as a Senate fellow. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $123,252. Kahn is a Republican. LaJeunesse, 37, of San Francisco, has been appointed deputy chief of staff and senior advisor to the Governor. Since June 2005, he has served as chief of staff and chief deputy controller for the office of the State Controller Steve Westly. From 2003 to 2005, LaJeunesse served as chief of staff to California Public Utilities Commissioner Susan P. Kennedy. He previously served as an attorney at Pacific Gas and Electric Company from 2002 to 2003 and vice president and general counsel at Avasta, Inc., a privately-held technology infrastructure company, from 2000 to 2002. LaJeunesse holds degrees from Dartmouth College and the Harvard Law School. He began his career as a policy analyst and administrative assistant for U.S. Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell and the Committee on Health and Human Services. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $123,252. LaJeunesse is a Democrat. Portillo, 28, of Sacramento, has been appointed director of constituent affairs for the Office of the Governor. He most recently served as deputy director of constituent affairs for the Office of the Governor. Portillo previously was a constituent affairs representative for the Governor from 2005 to 2006. Prior to that, he was a legislative aide and Senate fellow for the Office of Senator Roy Ashburn from 2003 to 2005. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $80,004.
