CRP Spends Money AGAINST CRP Members

The CRP maynot have a bounty program, they may be in $4.6 million of debt, but they have a little cash and staff time to turn on it’s own members.

Assemblyman Chuck DeVore has a proposal to change the way delegates are selected.

Today a letter arrived from Duf Sundheim, Ron Nehring and Tim Morgan opposing the change. Who paid for this mailing??? No doubt the CRP. As well an offical email and press release from CRP staff attacked the proposal.

Sundheim and company have every right to have their opinion. They should not be allowed to use CRP dollars to influence the decision. Of course this party has paid consultants from party coffers to run "proxy" drills to bottle up items they don’t like.

The CRP leaders worry about disunity and then shamelessly abuse CRP dollars to attack a members proposal. Let the members decide and the leaders implement.

Regardless of your view can’t we at least agree that CRP resources should not be spent attacking member proposals?

Devore’s Email follows:

Dear CRP Member,

By now you should have received an unprecedented email from Chairman Duf Sundheim regarding the proposal to enact a one-time change to our by-laws to ensure our early input to the 2008 Presidential primary process.

In the email, Chairman Duf Sundheim asks you to oppose this effort, saying that we need to have the proposal “…thoroughly discussed and vetted by the membership before taking action.”

What is unmentioned is that unless you act this weekend you will miss your chance as the Republican National Committee has a deadline of June 30, 2007 for us to change our delegate selection rules.  It’s now or never.

Let me be clear.  The early and extra election that the Legislature has proposed for February 2008 is for the sole purpose of placing a term limit initiative on the ballot so that termed-out Democratic leaders can file for reelection in time for regular June 2008 primary.  A term limit change would have to be approved by a two-thirds vote of the Legislature.  If this does not happen, then the entire rationale for this extra $90 million election goes away – and we miss an opportunity to have an early say in the election.

I ask that you support a vote to suspend the rules so that we may have a full discussion of the proposal to select 53 of 170 Presidential nominating convention delegates at the February 2008 CRP convention.   Once we have that discussion, only a two-thirds vote of the convention can approve the by-laws change.  This is an appropriate check against poorly considered proposals.

This proposal is simple and will only be in effect if there is no early February 2008 election.  It also sunsets itself in 2008.  The full text of the proposal is below.

 See you this weekend!

All the best,

 Chuck DeVore
