Sunday San Diego

Out of Thin Air… The departure of Ken King from the 52nd Congressional race may have been mysterious and quiet, but the "potential" candidacy of County Supervisor Dianne Jacob for the open house seat created quite a buzz last week.  It proves once again that political rumors are often fueled by their own hot air.

Jacob said long ago she would not be running for Congress, and — despite the fervent grist mill — absolutely nothing has changed in that regard.  None of it amounted to anything other than the same folks talking to each other and building much ado out of nada.  In fact, I wasn’t even going to post a thing about it, but the anonymous SD411 decided yesterday it was an entry on Red County SD.

BTW, Jacob was in the ROV the very first day of filing, the Monday before last, to pull her papers for re-election. With $400k on hand, there is also a rumor afloat that she might be hard to beat.  I may have look into that one.  Not.

Speaking of CD 52… The Sac Bee ran a story yesterday on relatives of office-holders and former law-makers that are seeking legislative and congressional seats this year, including Duncan D. Hunter’s quest.  Read it here.

La Mesa Loses… Councilmember Dave Allan announced several days ago he would not seek re-election.  A couple of years ago, he won the County GOP’s local elected official of the year award and was being touted by some to seek the 77th Assembly seat.  During the six years I worked with him as a colleague, we developed a good friendship.  He is honest and does what he believes is right.  He doesn’t worry about the political ramifications of either trait.  Dave is often refreshing in his straighforwardness.

When we disagreed, I knew that it was forgotten by the time he got home from a meeting, not to resurface in some future vote.  As I jokingly told a group of his supporters a few years ago, “He and I have disagreed at times…and in those instances, it hasn’t been personal…it’s simply because he’s wrong.”  (Sorry ‘bout that Dave!)

I caught up with Allan a few days ago, and – in his well-known free-form style – here’s what he had to say, while also tossing out a bit of a resumé…

It’s been an honor and privilege to serve the people of La Mesa…still many more issues to work on before my term is up in December.  Being a councilmember has been exciting!  Disappointing!  But, most rewarding!  I know the two people that I endorse for council this year will continue to serve and protect the quality life for the citizens of La Mesa.

As a servant of the people my entire adult life – U.S. Army, Fire Department and City Council – I will continue in the field of public safety…so if anybody knows anyone hiring, let me know.  I will be enjoying life with my family and grandkids…I am so blessed!

When I was elected in 2000 the issue that was the most important for me was to have paramedics on all our fire engines that would deliver advanced life support.  I am happy to say mission accomplished.

As our Governor says, “I be back.”

La Mesa Wins… As a result of Allan’s decision, La Mesa-Spring Valley School Board Member, longtime GOP activist, and former City of SD Rules Committee Counsel Bill Baber will run for a city council seat.

"This couldn’t happen to a better guy," said County Republican Chairman Tony Krvaric, "Another one from our team moving down the field.  La Mesa will be well served."

November Nutshell:  Two La Mesa Council seats up; top two vote-getters; incumbent Ruth Sterling expected to run for re-election; Shannon O’Dunn previously announced her intention.

Have a great week!

If Barry and Joel Anderson won’t throw their hat in for Hunter’s seat, maybe I will……I got the experience…I lived with Barry for a few years (And anyone will tell you who has lived with Barry-you get a lot of politcal experience and knowledge that way!!).

Roger, thanks, but there’s a current presidential candidate that seems to be basing some of their campaign on having lived for eight years with a former officeholder.

As Dick Morris said, yeah the White House chef has eight years experience in the same bulding as well.

But Barry, we never had “that” kind of relationship. However, I did run for State Assembly after living with you. Come to think about it, didn’t Steve Baldwin run for State Assembly after living with you??? Has Colleen thought about running for office? SHe has more years living with you than any of us…..
