One of the questions I have been asked often since President Trump started his second term is what is his fixation with Canada? It has baffled me to no end. The part that really leaves me without explanation why in God’s name would he ever want Canada as the 51st state.
This is a country that elected a man-child as its Prime Minister simply because he is the son of the former PM, Pierre Trudeau. Justin became famous because he delivered a eulogy at his father’s funeral. Is that a real reason to launch someone toward being your national leader? Then they elected him repeatedly. This is despite the fact he debanked a group of protesting truckers who were against his dictatorial rules regarding COVID vaccines.
This is a country that has not had a team win in its national sport – hockey – in over 30 years.
Canada has effectively banned the sale of handguns and rifles which they call “assault weapons.” They do not have our 1st or 2nd Amendment.
This is a country whose currency has plummeted against the U.S. dollar, but elected someone as to replace Justin because he would stand up to Trump instead of someone who would stand up for them.
This is a country who has a national health system that causes its citizens to cross over to the U.S. increasing our trade dollars because they cannot get actual medical care from their system.
This is a country that has the same number of Canadians living in the U.S. as Americans living in Canada despite America having ten times the population.
Most importantly, adding it as a state would add two liberal Democrats to the U.S. Senate and untold Democrats to the House. Why would you want that Mr. Trump?
Despite all those kind words expressed above, Canada is a rather good neighbor and a reasonable country. They are not the train wreck of an operation south of our border – Mexico. This is despite the recent surge of cartel activity coming from Canada because the Southern border has been shut down.
A small number of drugs has come across the Canadian border into our country along with some illegal aliens. It is not the humongous flood of drugs coming from Mexico. It is not the flood of people that Mexico lets traverse its country to jump our border illegally. Most importantly, there are not international gangs running these illegal drugs and people and major portions of their country like Mexico. Comparatively speaking Canada is an alright place. And only a small part of the country speaks French; not enough to hold anything against them.
And then there are the multiple problems in Canada like the rampant anti-Semitism. Mr. Trump has been fighting the uncontrolled hatred at a multitude of American universities. Why would he want to bring into our union a country that has been described as having some of the worst cases of anti-Semitism in the world? In a report by Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs and Combating Anti-Semitism, they stated in the year after October 7, 2023, that incidents of Jew Hatred skyrocketed by 670%. So much for “Canadian nice.”
And the authorities are doing nothing about it. Why would we want these people in our country?
It is not like the economy of Canada is going gangbusters. In addition to the weakness in the Canadian dollar there is a lot to be concerned about. A recent study by the Mises Institute in July 2024 led them to write: “Incomes in Canada are at the West Virginia level, house prices are at the Los Angeles level, and Canadian taxes are halfway to the Soviet Union. It is not rare for a middle-class family in Canada to pay half their income in taxes. Meanwhile, since the pandemic, Canada’s official food inflation is up 25%, and energy” It would make more sense to make Puerto Rico the 51st state than this financial mess and that is not particularly attractive.
Canada’s per-capita GDP has been shrinking while its bankruptcies have been rising. Why would we want this mess?
Why might we want them? Because they already live in LA-LA land? Sixty-two percent say their country contributes positively to world affairs. They are currently as important as the French, and they are only important in their own mind. Seventy-eight percent say they are a caring country and 74% express pride in their single source medical system. This is why despite their dismal economy they voted to stick with the party of Pierre’s man-child because they do not like some silly things President Trump said. Who would want these people?
President Trump, I believe on many fronts you are doing a great and brave job confronting challenges to America. This is not one of them. Leave Canada alone except for finishing the Keystone XL pipeline.
