CRA on Kennedy, Website Changes, Tookie

CRA TAKES BOLD STEP
The California Republican Assembly is the State’s oldest Republican volunteer organization.  Earlier this week, that groups Executive Committee voted 27-0 to support a resolution demanding the the Governor ‘terminate’ Democrat Susan Kennedy as his Chief of Staff, else they would support withdrawal of the Governors GOP pre-primary endorsement at the State GOP convention this February in the Bay Area.  You can read more about this on the main page.  Yours truly served as State President of the CRA from 1995-97, and I am still tired from the work (unpaid).  But I fondly recall that as an organization, we registered well over 100,000 new Republicans (more than any other GOP group that cycle, including the Womens Fed), our pack donated hundreds of thousands to great candidates, our volunteers walked countless thousands of precicts, and we crowned off the term presenting the coveted Ronald Reagan Freedomfighter award to then-Texas Governor George W. Bush.

This resolution from a grassroots group shows the angst of the GOP activist community on this appointment.  It isn’t surprising to me, at all, though, given Kennedy’s resume (her past posts working for Davis, Feinstein, the CRP and NARAL are so high-profile).

POSITIVE FEEDBACK ON COLUMNS OPPOSING BOND BORROWING
I wanted to acknowledge the steady stream of complementary e-mails from readers on the series of columns that we have featured on California’s financial future — with a particular emphasis on why a massive infrastructure bond is poor public policy for California’s future.  We will continue to bring you cutting-edge commentary on California politics and policy.  If you feel like you might want to contribute a column (600-800 words) – you can reach out to me (below) and we can dicuss it!  It’s your chance to have an impact on policy and politics in the Golden State!

NEW WEBSITES CHANGES
There are some new changes coming your way on the FlashReport.  Already the site has been updated so that if you want to print any page (except the main page), it will format easily for your printer.  So if you want to bring out a particular commentary, or blog entry, or featured column, you should have no trouble.  Look for some ‘print’ icons to start appearing soon.  Also, on the main page, starting in the next couple of days, you will notice that the developers have given me the ability to add headlines to individual stories, as well as the ability to write a paragraph under a link should I choose.  So this should help me to guide you towards what I feel are the best stories of the day!  Finally, by the year’s end (I hope), we should be rolling out an update that will allow for you, as a user, to register with the site and then you will be able to post comments to my daily commentary post, or to any of the entries on the FlashReport blog!  We’ll so how this turns out.

TOOKIE WILLIAMS
There are a ton of stories today on the upcoming execution of Tookie Williams, which is scheduled for late Monday night (the stroke of midnight).  Rather than expound on all of this, I will simpy reprint the letter that I sent to the Governor as a California citizen:

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger:

I am sure you are being buried in correspondence concerning the upcoming execution of Tookie Williams.

I am writing to urge you to reject clemency for this murderer.

California is state with the Death Penalty.  After being convicted by a jury of his peers for several brutal murders, Wilson was given the death penalty.

To give clemency to Williams for conduct AFTER being sentenced to death would be to make a mockery of the death sentence.  It would also mean that there should be a subjective review of the conduct of every inmate on death row before their execution.

I believe clemency in a capital punishment case should be reserved for those rare instances where you, as Governor, are presented with evidence that leads you to believe that the person to die was convicted in error.

Thank you for your consideration.
