New Guest Editor – and my local HS protestors trash a 7-11

Today I am pleased to announce a new addition to the FlashReport Team — Nicholas Romero!  For those of you who don’t know Nick (pictured to the right) , he is currently a Field Representative for Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, and has been a leader in youth politics – most notably with Young Americans for Freedom (I am an alumni of YAF myself, having served as State Chairman from 1990-93 and on YAF’s National Board from 1992-95).  Nick is a fine conservative — and a smart guy with a keen eye!  Recently I reached out to Nick to ask him if, from time to time, he would like to serve as the FlashReport’s first Guest Editor!  I am happy to say that Nick not only said yes, but was quite enthusiastic!

Now, "What is a Guest Editor," you ask?

Every morning, there is a ton of work done on the FR website, culling through literally dozens of websites in order to then format them for the main page.  There are some mornings where it is really tough for me to get this done – either because I have a work-related meeting that is in the early morning (thus I would have to get up SUPER DUPER early to do the site), or because I am on a vacation.  After diligently updated this site EVERY DAY since October first, with the exception of the week between Christmas and New Years, I have called up reinforcements!  As Guest Editor, Nick will be able to feature guest columns of his choosing, in addition to the important task of choosing which news stories, columns and editorial appear on the main page!

If you have any thoughts or advice for Nick as he starts his new task, you can e-mail him here.  You can read more about him by clicking through his name at the top of the main page any day that he is guest editing.

As for my daily commentary – I will continue to write those when I can, even on days when Nick is the guest editor.  Otherwise I will be tapping one of our esteemed FR weblog contributors to pen a commentary!

There is a ton of news today — with immigration being the major story.  The tens of thousands of high school students ditching school yesterday to protest Congressional attention on illegal immigration is the headline profiled in most California papers.  Speaking from personal experience, it was bizarre yesterday while working my day-job at the Orange County Sheriff’s Department to see about 400 kids all storm onto a part of our property (where we could watch from our windows) and hold a rally, screaming and waving Mexican flags.  This particular group had just come from down the street where some of them had ransacked a 7-11 store.  Perhaps the overall mission of the protests would have been better achieved by waving American flags, and observing the law?  But then, isn’t ditching school against the rules?  Hmmmm.

The Governor has a column that leads the main page today where he talks about immigration.  First and foremost, the Gov gets credit for speaking out on this issue rather than ducking out on the issue.  That said, probably the part of the piece that was the most controversial was the Governor calling for a guest-worker program.  This gets to the center of the debate — what do you do about well over ten million illegal aliens residing in the United States.  It isn’t practical to eject them all tomorrow.  On the other hand, it seems to fly in the face of the law, and disrespectful to those who came here legally, to just wave a wand and grant them legal status.  I recommend you read the Governor’s piece, as well as the create columns and editorials selected today by Nick.

There are some notable obituaries today for Lyn Nofziger.  This native-Californian was throughout Ronald Reagan’s career from the Statehouse to the Whitehouse a key advisor, and one of the most conservative voices in his ear.  He was a great guy, and I will miss him.

There is a lot more to read on the main page — so have at it!
