Sunday San Diego

USA Today Covers La Suer Bill Targeting Convicted Athletes… I’m posting this a little late, perhaps, but what political junkie reads USA today?  Glad I came across it now.  La Suer’s AB 2165 would ban college students from team sports or collegiate sporting events if the athlete is convicted of a violent felony, until after paying their debt to society.  This after last year’s state community college football champs (Grossmont College) apparently fielded some thugs…meaning thugs off the field…thuggery on the field is still ok, it is football.

Even the ACLU couldn’t have a problem with this bill, could they…or should I ask?

See the story here.

Those Damn Water Boards Will Get You Every Time… A press release from the campaign of 77th AD Candidate Joel Anderson referred to his service as president of the Padre Damn Water Board.  A prime example of just why you can’t rely on spell check.  Other than the error, the Anderson missive was dam good.

Line of the Week… Also an AD 77 candidate, Santee Councilmember Jack Dale takes the honors here, as a result of his comments at the San Diego East County Chamber’s Friday morning breakfast meeting.  After County Supervisor Dianne Jacob mentioned how ludicrous it was that the county had to construct a $700K sound wall for a roadway expansion so as not to impact the least Bell’s vireo breeding season, Jack said he and his wife have five kids…but no sound wall…which hasn’t impacted their breeding.  See the SDUT story.

More on AD 77… I’m glad to see some other campaigns finally took my hint and are sending some info on their activities.  Received a Notes from Headquarters from the Debbie Beyer effort.  Some excerpts:

Last weekend, virtually overnight — as planned — Debbie Beyer for Assembly 4×8 signs appeared throughout East County heralding the opening round of the last month of the campaign.

Debbie made her second visit to the patriots and the Minutemen standing watch along our border.  Debbie spoke to the group and reviewed an area known as one of the most traveled routes to smuggle drugs into our country and neighborhoods.

Jay La Suer hosted an event for conservative lobbyists in Sacramento that brought Debbie’s message to Sacramento and a nice shot of campaign donations.

La Mesa City Councilman Ernie Ewin hosted an event for Debbie at Sanfillippo’s in La Mesa which not only highlighted his support for Debbie, but he support in this very important community.

Richard Rider on Sanders Just Saying No to the Chargers…
Libertarian Richard Rider ran against Jerry for Mayor, but is now crediting Sanders for a reality check, facing up to the economics of the City of SD providing even more sports subsidies.  Typically colorful Rider language, worth reading:

Sanders has wisely called the Chargers’ bluff, telling them to look around the county for any city dumb enough to build a new stadium for them to play football in 10 times a year.  Good luck, Chargers!

The more realistic possibility is that the team will eventually move to Las Vegas, or to some hapless city in another state.  But their problem is that economists have thoroughly documented the financial folly of cities subsidizing pro sports teams.  Hence it is not guaranteed that some desirable city will give the Chargers’ owners the subsidies they think they are entitled to by birthright as American billionaires.

Jack Orr on Oceanside’s Union Lobbyist Protection Ordinance… I posted on this some time ago, but North County consultant Orr’s update this week was impassioned, to say the least:

The Public Employee Union Lobbyist Protection Ordinance (PEULPO) will once again be on the agenda this Wednesday night. Sponsored by the three public employee union council puppets (Wood, Mackin, and Sanchez) a.k.a., "The Troika," the PEULPO will require all lobbyists except, OF COURSE, public employee union lobbyists, to register and complete an ETHICS course which will be conducted by the City Clerk’s Office. To paraphrase a local gadfly, it would appear that a lot of questions must be answered about this proposed ETHICS class. I doubt that any of the three union stooges on this city council have read even a smidgen of Socrates, or understands what is meant by "The unexamined life is not worth living." They may have to conduct a nation wide search for a full professor of Philosophy to instruct lobbyists that ethical behavior should be both teleological and eudaemological.  Nah!

Horn and Thompson:  A Mirror or an Echo?… Saturday’s SDUT coverage of former Assemblyman Bruce Thompson’s challenge to County Supe Bill Horn did reference some of their similarities, but the two seem to be using the same copy machine.  Check this out…

May 2, from the North County Times story on the race:

As for the illegal immigration issue, Thompson said that Horn and the county needed to conduct studies to show exactly how much taxpayer money is spent helping illegal immigrants.

For example, he asked how much emergency room and community clinics spend to treat the sick illegal immigrants, and how much schools spend to educate children of illegal immigrants.

Thompson acknowledged that immigration is a federal issue over which county supervisors have no direct control. But he said such a study would show that illegal immigrants are a burden, and allow county supervisors to petition federal officials for financial help.

May 4, from Bill Horn Media Advisory:

Chairman Horn Calls for Detailed Study on Illegal Immigration Costs to the County

What:  News conference to announce County intention to request comprehensive study on the costs and impact to the County of San Diego for illegal immigration

Why: Illegal immigration into and through San Diego County has become a stampede.  People are being victimized by gangs of criminals who come from south of the border.  Left in the paths used by thousands of illegal aliens are local governments that must pay for services and law enforcement costs.  Local hospitals and schools are also bearing the brunt of illegal immigration.

Since there is a significant lack of data, Chairman Horn believes it’s time for a comprehensive study on the fiscal impact of illegal immigration on County government.

Chairman Horn will request an updated study to determine the costs of illegal immigration in order to petition the federal government for reimbursement.

Mayoral Candidates Duking it out in Chula Vista… Duane Dichiara’s April 27 post, Listen Close and You can Hear a San Diego County Mayor Crashing and Burning, gives you can idea of why Steve Padilla is under attack in Chula Vista.  The race is heating up big time…see Saturday’s SDUT story here.
