Honeymoon with My Brother

This afternoon, a friend and I left foggy Oakland to venture to sunny, hot Danville, a bridge-tunnel moneyed suburb of SF with expensive boutiques, sidewalk cafes and an independent bookstore called Rakestraw Books.  Rakestraw Books was hosting a book-signing lunch with Franz Wisner, author of “Honeymoon with My Brother.”  I’m sure there is a good chunk of the FR readers who know Franz or have had an ex-Wilson Administration friend give them a copy of Franz’ book.  But if you haven’t picked up a copy of this book, I urge you to do it—for two reasons.

First, it is a fun read.  Light, easy summer fare that is written from the heart.  Second, Franz was one of us—policy wonk, political addict—who chucked it all and traveled around the world with his younger brother, Kurt, after of a couple of major life changing experiences. (I won’t give all of the details away—pick up the book and read it for yourself.  Here’s his website.)  Those of us still living the political life and juggling work/life balance issues can’t help to enjoy living vicariously through Franz and his brother as they travel the world, meeting people and seeing places that we’re only see on the television after we get the kids in bed and settle on the couch to fold clothes (or, for most of you husbands, just ignore the clothes and watch the TV).

Franz and Kurt (and his gracious and friendly parents, Joyce and Bob) were at the lunch today and charmed the female-dominated event with stories of their travels abroad, their efforts to get the book published and then marketed, and the status of their movie deal (Sony Pictures bought the rights and the screenwriter of “Hitch” is working on a screenplay).  In the interim, the guys are criss-crossing the country, meeting with book clubs and speaking at bookstore events.  They are also doing traveling abroad, working on a follow-up book.

Franz told me that he’s sure that his many friends from Gov. Pete Wilson’s administration have helped spur book sales.  But they would love to see sales continue to climb—they are now in their ninth printing of the paperback version. So go grab a copy at your nearest bookstore or order it on-line.  And tell a few friends (especially anyone who has ever done any business with the Irvine Company)!
