It wasn’t France, it was Greece

This last few weeks, the mostly closely guarded piece of information in state government politics was precisely where Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez went vacationing with his family in Europe.  Because I couldn’t identify precisely where on the "Continent" the Nunez family went, I reached out and used a photo of the Eiffel Tower as being symbolic of Europe

Well, we have learned from a very reliable source that while Californian has had no budget, Fabian and family have been relaxing in Greece!  So when I mentioned that he was likely eating a croissant, it was actually probably some Souvlaki.

So, we now publish a photo of the ruins of the Greek Parthenon, that sits on the Acropolis, high above Athens.

Of course, Nunez has now returned.  Or at least his signature is back with us as he apparently has issued some sort of predictable "if you don’t approve the budget we passed, we want to pile billions more in spending into it" edict.  At some point, Nunez will absorb the fact that because of the 2/3 vote requirement, it is going to be necessary to shrink that big, fat bloated budget a bit more, and actually make a few modest (very modest) programmatic changes to reduce budget deficits going into the next few fiscal years.

So, undoubtedly a fabulous time was had by all on this trip.  But we still have no budget, and posturing games being played by the Speaker.

John, looks like you’ve had one too many glasses of Ouzo today! It was widely reported in that dreaded “mainstream media” where the Speaker was on vacation. Only you and Senator Denham didn’t seem to get the facts straight (shocking).

FYI, 82 members of the legislature and a Republican Governor support this budget, including a member of the Senate Republican Caucus. That’s more than 2/3 of the legislature.

I respect the fact that as a highly paid Deputy Chief of Staff to the Speaker, you have to push his big fat budget.

But that said, the 2/3 requirement (of each house) means that compromise is required on the part of Democrats in order to pass a budget. To be honest, Senate Republican proposals are quite modest.

As for Ouzo, I hope that your boss brought you some!
