There seems to be a new trend in California. Republicans running for the State Assembly ….as Democrats.
The first one does not really surprise me much. San Mateo County Supervisor Jerry Hill was a registered Republican for several decades. When he was elected to the non-partisan San Mateo City Council in 1991 he was a registered Republican.
Hill is now running for AD 19.

I disagree with the examples Matt used because being familiar with both of them, I think I see more of a political consistency in Arabo and Caserta than he does, however, the question in both of those races should obviously come down to their records, not the promises they might make on the campaign trail and that is what primaries are for.
But it should be mentioned that a lot of famous political figures in history have been people who switched parties or ideologies as they came up (Reagan, Churchill, etc. etc.) and the ability to take a fresh look at your beliefs is a positive, not a negative at least in my opinion.

Churchill actually ‘ratted’ then ‘re-ratted’ back to his his first party… on important issues of principle of the day.

In fairness to Ronald Reagan… he became a Republican at least 15 years before
he ever ran for office. He then remained Republican the rest of his life.

RR did not change ideologies. In fact, he indicated that he had not left the D party as much as it had left him.
No such comparison can be made to those who leave for political expediency and personal gain.

It is an interesting analysis. However, in the Assembly we could lose the AD15 seat now represented by Guy Houston, the AD78 seat now represented by Shirley Horton and the AD80 seat now represented by Bonnie Garcia. It’s not three new Republicans in the Assembly after the election but three new Democrats we have to worry about.
