Congressman Doug LaMalfa

Back To Reality Or “Do You Want CHANGE For That Buck”?

Setting last nights unpleasantness aside for a moment, it had been expected the Guv will announce a special session on our crumbling budget and call for that today, with the likelihood that the Assembly and Senate will convene that session Thursday and immediately recess it.  The caucuses meet anyway on Thursday to elect their caucus leaders so everyone will be in town anyway, the termed out and the newbies.  Convening it allows the special session budget committees to be formed and perhaps hammer out some fixes to the massive budget revenue shortfall..or not.

Republicans remain firm that no new tax, sales tax, tax on business, whatever, will help fix this slumped over economy or subsequently, state revenues.   Instead removing dumb mandates like AB 32 could help kickstart some investor confidence, along with our position of tax credit incentives to employ people and invest in this state, not Nevada.  We’ll see.  It would figure that we only have til November 25 with this session as Thanksgiving is 2 days later and the true end of the term is November 30 at midnight.  The new crop will be sworn in the next day at noon.

Maybe they can fix this mess, although adding $13B worthof new debt last night via High Cost Rail and more hospital bonds won’t help…let alone leave any breathing room for water infrastructure funding with our impending drought crisis.  One day though, when the public demands it, we’ll get it straightened out.

    Mr. LaMalfa.
Let’s show them where we would cut to get the budget balanced. Instead of complaining about the tax increases, show where we can cut the spending. Conservatives across the state will support you in this effort. Complaining and whining does not show leadership, putting the cuts on the table does. Let’s get to it!
