Arcadia: When the “Tolerant” Become Intolerant

Yesterday the Pasadena Star-News ran article about the City of Arcadia and the planned speaker for the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast. I served as a consultant on Mayor Peter Amundson’s campaign the two times he ran, so I know a little more about this than some.

The “controversial” speaker is the Rev. H.B. London. The Rev. London is a Vice-President of Ministry Outreach/Pastoral Ministries for Focus on the Family and worked in the Arcadia area. Tradition has let the Mayor invite whomever he/she wanted to speak at this event or the variations that have taken place. Someone from Focus on the Family is a good fit, because Focus was founded in Arcadia by Dr. James Dobson before growing into the amazing international ministry that it is.

But you see the problem is Focus on the Family, the Rev. H.B. London and a majority of pesky Californian voters think that marriage should be between a man and women.

So some people associated with Gay and Lesbian organizations have decided that this view is not tolerant enough. So what to the preachers of tolerance want? Censorship. They want the Mayor to ban Rev. London from speaking at the prayer breakfast, again all in the pursuit of tolerance.

Here is part of a comment left on the newspaper article. "Corey Mondello1:10 pm
Only the elimination of all conservative Christians will allow all Americans to be free and the world to no longer have to live in fear of the U.S.A.’s imperialist, terrorist holy war. The conservative ideology has never helped mankind in any way, it has not only never helped mankind in anyway, it has oppressed, murdered, raped and killed all those in it’s way to gain power…."

I know i feel the love already.

First off, I am sure that I don’t agree with the Rev. London about many things, especially some theological issues. So what. Let him speak.

I for one think that intolerance is underutilized and has in a few respects served us well. Intolerance of tyranny. Intolerance of slavery fueled the abolitionist movement. Intolerance of “Jim Crow” laws was not a bad thing in my view. Limiting a speaker in the name of tolerance is well, intolerant and un-American.

A good example of the tolerance police lack of focus is a family’s email that has been sent around and is quoted in the paper denouncing the Rev. London. The family views the Rev. London as hateful and claims their son was harassed and “beaten” in the city of Arcadia.

The Mayor followed up with the family and discovered they never filed a police report in the “beatings”. I wish I was kidding, but how can someone actually want to stop a speaker who never harmed their child because of his views, while tolerating allowing someone who beat their child to be free and perhaps beat others.

That is intolerable to me.

There you go again. When liberals try to stop conservatives you complain. When conservatives try to stop liberals it is OK with you.

Must I remind you of the $100k you cost WCUSD when you interrupted and tried to stop a voluntary after hours seminar for teachers of how to address a sexual identity issue a student may have?

Remember, freedom of speech also applies to those who you disagree.

  2. mikes@flashreport.org Says:

Yes, John C. Shewmaker, free speech does apply to those I disagree with. But no where does it say that school districts should pay teachers to learn about counseling of thirteen year olds students by other non-professionals on issues like homosexuality. In fact John, I made it clear they had a right to discuss it or whatever they wanted amongst themselves, but that teacher training should be used for something like teacher training. Beacause it was during the school day. BTW that was just not my position but the position of the majority of the school board.

I have put up with your three losing campaigns for school board and your costly special election.

A good example of me tolerating your free speech is your family’s blog http://thetruthwcusd.wordpress.com.There, you and your family (You, Caryn and fellow board member Jesiica. I exclude Julie, who has had alot of difficulties and is an exception to you family’s vileness).

In your blog you have lied(as you did above), tried to imply I want to raise taxes, have homosexual sex and other wacked out ideas that you think help you and your duaghter politically or just ammuse your fiendish tendencies.

Did I sue you after you blundered across the commercial vs. political speech divide? Nope

I know that your vulgar blog brings you some notion of sadistic pleasure. At least you have something to do with your free time.

  3. john_shewmaker@prodigy.net Says:

Again, the underlying point of your blog is freedom of speech. Yet in your version of the events that cost the school district over $100k, just proves if you disagree with someone you exhibit the same tactics as those you are denouncing.

Typical Spence – deflect, accuse, defile, or misstate.

You accuse my family of heinous behavior, yet you are the board member who was censured for releasing closed session information about an alledged rape of a student and swearing at a 40 year veteran teacher for having the audacity to ask how your father was doing at a board meeting.

Speaking of losing campaigns heres hoping you next campaign has the same outcome as your first run for school board and your more recent run for the water board.

As for my “family blog” – wishing, hoping, and assuming it is me does not make it true.

Speaking of family for a person who accuses me of writing about your wife and children, it seems the record is clear as you are the one who brings my family into it. Right Polka Dot.

Members of my family, including your colleague Jessica, have shown they individually have absolutely no problem expressing their opinion of you and your behavior.

As for your commercial and political line – again when you agree it is fine, but when you disagree you make threats.

As far as I know you are the Chief of Staff for Assemblyman Curt Hagman. Isn’t 1:34PM normal work hours?

I have four words for you “Misuse of State property.” Aren’t you in enough trouble with the FPPC?

  4. mikes@flashreport.org Says:

Thanks for proving my point about you John. I was censored I mean censured by a three vote teacher union endorsed board that were afraid to give me a hearing into the accusations against me. They then approved hearings for everyone after me Why? because you knew I could prove my case and the mother was very public in opposing your daughter’s vote to let sex offenders mentor kids. (wish I was kidding about that but I will post the mail piece John is mad about soon enough.)

There are a lot of things you don’t know and one is my work schedule nor days that I take off.

One thing I don’t know where you work or why you bring up polka dots all the time? But whatever.

You need to do some research as well into IP address, legal cases on commercial speech, similartities between written and speech patterns as well as the fact your post as a “guest” on that blog maybe removed but on the internet nothing is forgotten.

God Bless America. I am sure I will read all about. LOL

  5. john_shewmaker@prodigy.net Says:

My, you are predictable – deflect, accuse, defile, or misstate.

It was those nasty other board members who picked on you for telling a teacher during a board meeting to go “f*** yourself.” What would you have “proven”? That you did not say it or the voice on the recording was not yours? Remember, you apologized to your father for your language. Why did you apologize to your father as “he raised you better than that,” if you did not say it.

As to the closed session agenda item, since you continue to perpetuate the lie that Jessica and George voted to allow sex offenders to tutor students shows how completely immoral and utterly depraved you are. I dare you to post the flyer and explain why 6 years after you wrote the bill in question you finally decided to bring it to the board. Why only certain crimes and not others, like murderers.

As you are well aware, Jessica stated that adding the text of the law to board policy was unnecessary and redundant, as the district was required to follow the law. What you wanted was equivalent to attaching the entire vehicle code to ones drivers license. The board policy already in place was sufficient.

Remember, as you said, the internet does not forget and IP addresses are traceable polka dot.

Here are some legal terms for you to remember when researching cases – discovery, depositions, public official.

  6. mikes@flashreport.org Says:

Classic Shewmakerism: he asks what would a hearing prove? Then threatens me with a hearing. LOL

  7. john_shewmaker@prodigy.net Says:

Polka Dot, while sitting at the dias you screamed at a teacher to “f*** himself.”

You were given an opportunity to apologize to the teacher and to this day you have not apologized.

You cost the district tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees because you could not say you were sorry.

BTW, do you know how read – The question was what would the hearing have proven, not that you threatened me????

Again, deflect, defile, accuse, misstate and according to the investigation by an outside party a pattern of threats and intimidation of teachers, staff, and colleagues.

  8. mikes@flashreport.org Says:

    More classic Shewmaker. LOL

  9. john_shewmaker@prodigy.net Says:

Again, deflect, defile, accuse, misstate, intimidate, threaten, and coerce, but no ability to answer.

    The truth hurt, polka dot.
