Random Thoughts

  • GOP Assemblyman Keith Richman wants to take on Democrat Attorney General Bill Lockyer for State Treasurer.  Interesting, then, that on all of the bonds, he cast the same ‘aye’ votes that Lockyer would have cast.
  • I thought I knew a lot of jargon, but Katie Levinson at the Schwarzenegger Campaign office has me beat.  Do you know what it means to ‘run traps’?  Now I do.  Maybe we’ll need to ask her for a ‘jargon of the week’ column.
  • Last week, I stood with Eric Roach outside of the big fancy doors to the now-vacant 50th Congressional District office on Capitol Hill.  Eric didn’t walk into it on that trip.  But I hope he walks into it in January.
  • Speaking of Washington, D.C., Republican Congressman Richard Pombo gets a big TY for lining up White House Tour tix for my Aunt and Uncle.  Their lame Democratic Congressman totally let them down.  Pombo has a GOP challenger in June — who supporter Kerry for President.  LOL.
  • John Howard, the managing editor over at Capitol Weekly owes me a beer for bumping my column this week to run instead some propaganda in support of raising taxes for government-run pre-school, and the importance of public financing of campaigns.
  • As a result of reading a commentary here, GOP vitner Dennis Groth shipped off ten bottles of wine to Governor Jeb Bush, making good on a Superbowl bet between Bush and then-Governor Gray Davis a few years old.  Back then, Florida’s direct-shipping ban kept more than two bottles from being shipped.
  • Steve Sion came to the last Young Republican Federation of California State Board meeting looking for an endorsement.  After talking about his support of gay marriage and his "struggle" with the abortion issue, the YRFC gave him a pre-primary endorsement.  And this from the conservative YR group.
  • In Orange County, GOP Chairman Scott Baugh doesn’t endorse in contested primaries.  But in neighboring San Berardino, GOP Chairman Bill Postmus does.
  • What does it mean when I visibly cringe when I get the "Governor announces appointments" e-mail?  The last one I read talked mentioned that Susan Kennedy’s former top aide at the PUC has been installed as Cabinet Secretary Fred Aguair’s Deputy.  Another non-GOP appointment I might add.
  • The University of California is going through multiple scandals, all under the very quiet watch of U.C. Regents’ Chairman Gerry Parsky.  If he doesn’t step up soon, perhaps legislators should call for his ouster, too.

Keith Richman made fiscally responsible votes for the education, transportation and levee bonds. Richman did not vote for the housing bond, as Bill Lockyer is certain to do in the fall.

Thank you for mentioning the continuing mess
    at the University of California.

The top leadership of my Alma Mater has been a mess for Decades.
If Hercules thought the Augean Stables were tough, he should try
a steam cleaning of UC’s arrogant top crust!

If I could, I’d hand the Presidency of the university to Prof. Thomas
Sowell, and stand back to watch the chips fly.
