Bill Gore Appointed Sheriff in San Diego

As previously predicted, Undersheriff Bill Gore was just appointed by the County Board of Supervisors to the vacant position created by Bill Kolender’s mid-term resignation.  It was expected the Supervisors would conduct interviews today, with a vote next week.  However, the board proceeded with the decision to fill the spot just minutes ago.

The vote total by ballot, prior to the decision being memorialized by adopted motion, was as follows:

Bill Gore – 4

Jim Duffy – 2

Jay La Suer – 1

If it doesn’t seem to add up, that’s because each Supe was allowed more than one vote if needed to narrow the field.  Supervisor Dianne Jacob voted for all three of those listed, prior to the final motion being adopted.

Gore will now be able to run as the appointed incumbent in next year’s election.  Both Duffy and La Suer have announced campaigns, as have David Bejarano and Bruce Ruff.  The latter two did not file the paperwork necessary to be considered to fill the vacancy by appointment.

With Gore’s appointment, it remains to be seen if all of the previously announced candidates stay in the running next year.

If you can spell barn burner, I can.

Former Assemblyman Jay La Suer, a candidate for the seat, weighs in:

“It appeared the decision was made long before any of the candidates walked through the door. Back room “Barbara Streisand” at it’s finest, in America’s Finest City, Enron by the bay. The NEW face of the Republican Party speaks loud & clear. Conservatism works every time and I for one will stick with my conservative beliefs. Remember, the three had already endorsed Gore; when the subject of Gore’s intimate involvement at the Ruby Ridge incident came up, the Board ignored it! How can the incident at Ruby Ridge be ignored when considering the appointment of a sheriff? On two occasions during the interview, I advised the Board I did not support their policy of appointing a Sheriff. It was like taking the vote away from the people and electing a sheriff by committee. A caretaker sheriff should have been appointed with the proviso that the caretaker not run in 2010.

“At least they impeached the governor in Illinois for his backroom deals. Common sense, character and integrity were not in attendance yesterday.”

Regardless of who you may support, croneyism should never be supported. We want a sheriff who is honest, and who has proven credentials. Thank you for your comments Jay. And good luck with the campaign. Hopefully you will get all the support you need.

We have a Chicago politician in the White House and some politicians here in San Diego are conducting themselves as though they are from Chicago. I knew something was amok when the County Supervisors endorsed candidates for Sheriff last summer. More disturbing was they did so without consulting the Deputy Sheriff’s Association (DSA) first. The DSA is not an irrelevant organization, nor are the voters for that matter. 4 out 5 of the candidates have been interviewed by the DSA. They will decide who to endorse sometime after the July 3rd deadline.

More disturbing was the Supervisors appointment yesterday. This was something we were told would not to happen until next week and the vote would be forwarded to the next session. I am told that the candidates instructed that they did not have to come and bring their supporters to the meeting the Supervisors were holding to make the appointment. Well.. guess what? Bill Gore was there and with his supporters.

No surprise to anyone. Now we have a new Sheriff that is running as an incumbent. How convenient is that?
